It is1843. On a remote Scottish island, Ivar, the only inhabitant, finds a man unconscious on the beach. He is John Ferguson, a church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of this situation, Ivar takes him into his home, and despite having no common language, a tentative bond begins to form between the two men. Meanwhile on the mainland, John's wife Mary anxiously awaits news. This novel is set against the rugged backdrop of a faraway spot beyond the Shetland Isles & is a touching exploration of ordinary people and the connections between them.
